Woman on the Run: The Laurie Bembenek Story
Catherine Fogarty
- Andrea Lysenko
Apprehended in our very own city of Thunder Bay, Laurie Bembenek (better known as “Bambi”) was a convicted killer on the run before getting caught working as a waitress at the Columbia Grill on May Street. Although convicted of killing her then-husband’s ex-wife, the evidence was weak and Bembenek always maintained her innocence, saying she was framed by a corrupt U.S. police force. All the while, hundreds of Thunder Bay and Milwaukee supporters were holding rallies during her trial, and even selling bumper stickers and T-shirts saying “Run Bambi Run.” Catherine Fogarty does a superb job narrating this compelling story, mustering up feelings of suspicion, sadness, and shock. Was Laurie Bembenek really a murderous killer fleeing justice, or rather, a political refugee escaping wrongful persecution in her home state? Woman on the Run will have you on the edge of your seat in no time and is a true testament to Bambi’s fight for justice.
