Promised Land

(2012)

Gus Van Sant directs a script co-written by the movie’s stars Matt Damon and John Kransinksi, from a story by Dave Eggers. Damon is Steve, a buyer for a multinational energy company. He is sent out to purchase drilling rights for natural gas, from rural, mid-western American farmers. He is accompanied by a wise and sassy corporate liaison (Francis MacDormand). The drilling will be done by “fracking” and an environmental activist (Kransinksi) shows up to reveal the horrors of the process and thwart selling rights. What the film is really about is finding out who you are and what you want to keep and “how to take care of things”. It is a beautifully made, softmessaging activist film.
